Wall of Shame

So, I check my email, and I find a letter informing that someone has decided to be an ugly little troll. This is not a career path I recommend.

Flavoroflove left a review that consisted entirely of "wow. YOU STINK I HATE YOU!" This, my friends, is what's known as a flame, and not a very good one. I mean, if you're going to be an idiot, you might as well make it count - be mean about something substantive. Hate a story? Say why. "I hated this story because ___________. It could have been made better by __________." And no, "because it sucks" and "never having been written" are not appropriate phrases to insert. If a story is just not to your liking, like it was fluffy and you like angst, or vice versa, realize that your only critique is the style and button your lip unless you have something worthwhile and helpful to say.

So, flavoroflove, your account is being toasted for trolling, and because I don't want to see you mailbombed. I will keep a note of your email address, though, so please don't be stupid enough to do it again.

wow..someone said that. how mean.

Skyler19 @ Jan 16, 2007 02:55 am

You'd think that in a community of writers and readers that someone would at least come up with a good insult and justify it! The rest of us think you're great Mynuet!

kitten_1234 @ Jan 16, 2007 05:43 am

wow. a much harsher reaction than i was expecting, but Mynuet rocks for standing up for the writers here. :)

RaineMalfoy @ Jan 16, 2007 08:01 am

yeah Mynuet rocks how silly could you be they were bound to find out

blubberguts @ Jan 16, 2007 08:37 am

oxymoron8 @ Jan 16, 2007 08:39 am

I am only suprised there was no netspeak in the review.

reena01 @ Jan 16, 2007 08:55 am

Thats way gay. Don't you think? You should also make a rule about updating in like a month or so.

Rainpuddle @ Jan 16, 2007 02:16 pm

wow...that was kinda bi*chy, wasn't it?

ScarletXBegonia @ Jan 16, 2007 02:20 pm

Harry26: I'm assuming by gay you mean happy? Because, of course, you're not a troll or someone who uses what a person is as a form of insult, right? Of course not, I'm sure you're really a wonderful person, and you're indicating pleasure in sharing happiness and joy. Thank you for making the world around you so much brighter by leaving a comment which, while poor in substance, is rich in wishes for the gladness of others.

ScarletXBegonia: If you mean the review, yes. If you mean my deleting the account, maybe. I've never made it a secret, though, that I come down very hard on anyone who is trolling.

Mynuet @ Jan 16, 2007 03:12 pm

gay has three meanings. "happy" "homosexual" and "lame/uncool"
to be offended by a word that has changed meanings so frequently is just "gay"

RaineMalfoy @ Jan 17, 2007 12:00 am

Common usage of a term stemming from bigotry does not lessen the bigotry. Once upon a time, everyone used "the N word" and it applied equally to all blacks - does that mean it's acceptable to use?

In any case, it's an entirely weak and silly use of language. There are many better ways of expressing yourself, just like there are better ways of saying someone is an ass than by calling them retarded. (My son? Officially diagnosed as retarded, fyi.) To attempt to justify such a moronic lack of care in the use of language is just lame.

FYI, I haven't included the rule here, as I don't think it fair to apply it retroactively, but on the forums hate speech (which this use of the word 'gay' definitely is) is cause for banishment. In practice I tend to give warnings first, but be aware that just because you and all your friends say/do something, that doesn't make it right or acceptable.

Mynuet @ Jan 17, 2007 12:46 am

Mynuet, I remember reading somewhere before where you said that about your son, and I admit to using that word before in casual conversation. Since I read that however, I've made a conscious effort not to use that word in that connotation. So, I feel as cheesy as an after-school special for sharing that with you, but I wanted to let you know that I'm a success story!

@ Jan 17, 2007 09:28 am

Mynuet, since this is *your* site I think you should go ahead and delete the accounts of some of these repliers who don't seem to want to comply with normal, decent standards. And I too try not to use words like "gay" and "retarded" as negative adjectives. Bob from Bob and Sherry in the Mornings on the radio got really mad at a celebrity who they were interviewing that used "retarded" in that manner. Props to Bob!!!

Maelyn @ Jan 17, 2007 09:39 am

Maelyn: everyone has the rights to their own opinion here. people should NOT be deleted just because they think different. that is close-minded and wrong. the members above were extended fair warning in regards to what they said/wrote, and that is enough. should they do it again, by all means, delete their accounts (i can't help but feel you were including me in that) because at that point they would be blatantly disregarding the rules of the owner, but know that some of us that were not aware of such rules before now but are now enlightened, so we can respectfully abide by them, no further actions necessary. (at this point)

RaineMalfoy @ Jan 17, 2007 09:57 am

I don't delete people often, and I've yet to delete anyone for disagreeing with me. As I said, because it was not a clearly stated archive rule, it wouldn't be fair to expect people to have known beforehand, and so no one's getting deleted.

Mynuet @ Jan 17, 2007 05:00 pm

"Common usage of a term stemming from bigotry does not lessen the bigotry"

Very true. Even if you don't mean to be offensive, I happen to be VERY offended when I see the word "gay" used as a slur. We are, or, I hope we are, a community of readers and writers. I hope that we have the sense and decency to respect one another.
So while I'm glad that Mynuet doesn't delete accounts often, I don't have very much sympathy for those who do get deleted.
Like RaineMalfoy, I'm all for freedom of speech. However... freedom of speech is not the same thing as "freedom to be an absolute pig". If you are going to tell someone that you dislike their story, have the decency to explain why. That's not too much to ask.

silentocean @ Jan 18, 2007 09:09 am

i still don't know what about my story they didn't like. i must just be super-amazing-awesome and they are jealous. ;P

RaineMalfoy @ Jan 18, 2007 03:07 pm

*she and her cat, Buddy, give a mini crowd WAAAAAVVVVEEE for Mynuet* The very reason I don't leave reviews unless I really enjoy a story is for this very reason. If you don't like something, then hush. If you like a story and see where it could be made even more great than it is, then leave a critique (SP?). Words of praise and adoration are nice as well. I enjoy them with jam and butter. Yummy.

~I have left a lot of reviews, yet I have never felt the need to troll. I have read some things that were below average, but only in my opinion. Most of the time I leave a supportive comment on something they did right and a side comment about what I didnt like. But that is just me.~

CourtneyFaith @ Jan 20, 2007 03:24 pm

Tsk tsk tsk. *shakes head* Silly, silly people for thinking that Myn wouldn't find out and come down on them hard. The writers here put a lot of work into giving us these stories, so the least we can do is respect them when leaving reviews.

die Loreley @ Jan 20, 2007 04:07 pm

You know, I try to be helpful in my reviews. I'm not saying I always am, but I try. If I'm not being helpful, I try to be funny. Once more, sometimes my humor is off the mark and doesn't make the author smile -- at all. I've rarely gotten bitchy, but I have done it -- especially when I see work that is clearly below par and the author refuses to correct it and their fics are still archived on various sites. It annoys and frustrates me.

I try to be respectful and forthright. I try to leave funny, inspiring, or complimentary reviews if I have nothing constructive to add. It's upsetting and irritating to see people leave reviews like that.

Those of us that are authors all know how excited you get when you receive a review. Then, to log on and find something of that nature is just -- it's -- it's disappointing to say the least.

Anyhow, that's my two cents.

MrsDanielRadcliffe @ Jan 21, 2007 11:40 am

I've had some rude reviews off one person leaving multiple reviews mainly saying my story was juvenile and stupid.. don't really know the point to this as a few weeks ago they absolutly loved my stories.. alas we must try to ignore the rude comments and look forward to the good ones..

Aphrodite @ Jan 22, 2007 08:16 am

So true... it's completely ridiculous to review a story just to tell the author you don't like it. If you have nothing constructive to say, then it's a waste of electricity to flame... Besides, flames are horrible, and not 'conducive to a creative atmosphere'...

wow...I cant believe someone said that...I love your stories, there in the top five best on my story list in my head.
