Some site issues...

Hey all, as you may have noticed, we are having some issues with the site. At some point, it might be necessary to put everything into maintenance mode while we work on them. The basic problem is that the underlying platform for FIA is eFiction, and eFiction has been abandoned by the original creators and is almost certainly never going to get updated again. So... that means a lot of security issues. If I could just throw money at the problem, I would have an expert tech web developer code-y person completely move the site to another platform, probably something related to Wordpress. Since the winning Powerball plan didn't work out, though... that isn't happening at the moment. :P

A tech friend is helping me through the issues, and he's doing everything he can, but he's primarily an electrical engineer and totally admits that he has no amazing web expertise. So... right now, I can't give you all any clear news. I wish I could. But what I CAN say is that I'm going to fight to keep this site going in some format. I do not want to see us just close down. A lot of sites that used eFiction have done exactly that. They've moved all of the fics onto AO3, which means that the original work survived, but the site just could not keep going on anymore. I REALLY don't want this to happen. I just don't know enough to say exactly how it can be avoided right now, but I'm determined to find out. This site has meant so much to so many people for so long.. and I want to keep it alive. :) (Maybe once we know more about exactly what would need to be done, a GoFundMe project could happen!! I just don't know yet.)

Anyway, that's about it for now... further updates when I know more!!

Hi there. I've been a fan and member of this website since the beginning of 2000s. Life got in the way and I wasn't reading much of DG fanfiction for the last several years but I have returned to my love of DG a few weeks back and am so glad I did. There's so many stories I haven't yet read or would like to read again. I'm so sorry to hear about the state of the website, as it is very dated now but kudos to you for keeping it alive no matter what. This is really a happy place for so many of us ,who keep returning. This website is such a precious resource of great writing and must be preserved. Have you tried looking at groovefunnels or something simlar that lets you host atleast one website for free? I hope you are able to find a solution soon! Good luck and thank you so much for your hard work and dedication all these years

The hosting is currently free, because I have been hosting it on my reseller account for free for several years. The most recent issues with exceeding the bandwidth were due to spammers on the Forums. Hopefully that has now been taken care of. eFiction is past its end-of-life, so not sure what to do there, exactly.

Lyndsie has been amazing! :) But the problem with eFiction is a major one, no way around it. I actually found one major fansite that still uses eFiction and actually DOES make it work, though (AdAstra,) so I know that it's at least possible. We're still working on this, and we'll keep doing it, and we're not going to give up, so there is lots of hope on the horizon! :) (The winning Powerball solution WOULD have been nice, though..._

Oh noo. So this means that this server/format is becoming obsolete and the site will have to move or dissolve? I hope you can find a solution, this site is so dear to me and to so many others! Thank you Anise and Lyndsie for maintaining it afloat! Whatever happens I'll be supporting you! Let's hope for the best!!!

A lot of sites that used eFiction as a platform did have to do exactly that, but I do know of one that's STILL very much around, AdAstrafanfic.com, a Star Trek site. So it's at least possible! ;) One way or the other, though, believe me, I'm going to fight for this site to stay alive. Especially because I'm actually going back to writing D/G after not doing much of anything for a long time. (cue inspiring music)

Just rediscovered this site and am rereading all my favourite fics! Thank you so much for keeping this site alive, it brings so many teenage memories back to me. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

AprilChye @ Mar 25, 2021 09:57 pm

@AprilChye thanks so much! :) Things are under control right now, and I'm looking at some different long term options. (If I can just get that winning-Powerball plan to work out, that would be great... ;)

Isn't the code for what AO3 runs on open source? I get that probably some of the user information would be lost this way (i imagine favourites and comments as well), but have you considered setting up a dg.com using the AO3 platform?

shireen @ Apr 09, 2021 12:14 pm

@Shireen: Believe me, I wish I understood enough about coding and everything else techie to do something like that!! As it is, I wouldn't have any idea where to even begin. I've written some posts on the FIA FB page about the situation with actually hosting all the fics on AO3. A lot of the early archives have closed, and that's where they moved their fics. But this can go wrong, which is what happened (apparently, anyway,) with Fictionalley. I don't know any of the details, but that site closed and the fics were supposed to be moved in 2018. There are exactly 79 fics from FA on AO3 now. So that's one reason why I don't want to do that with FIA (also, I REALLY!! don't want to close it down to begin with!!) I think I'll repost the FB posts here so everyone can see what I mean. But thanks so much for the original suggestion. :)

Anise @ Apr 15, 2021 11:02 am

Do you know how much it would cost to have everything moved?

OneOfThoseGirls @ May 10, 2021 05:32 pm

@OneOfThoseGirls : I don't. I'm going to try to find out over the summer-- I'm teaching ESL and there's no way to do it during the school year. But I'm going to talk to some people I know and see what I can find out.
