Site downtime

In the next week, the site will be going down for a short period while we switch hosts. I promise we will make the time as short as possible.

Hello all! As usual, we will be closing the archive to submissions for two weeks during the December holidays. From December 20th through January 2nd, only those who are validated to skip the queue will be able to add new submissions. On the 3rd, we'll open again.

Graphic design

Hey everyone! I have a public service announcement. I'm working with some friends on a fandomy website project, and we're looking for a graphic designer. If you or anyone you know is interested, check out more at my LJ.

Also, while I have your attention - let's get some discussion started! It's a Free Form Monday - feel free to talk about whatever interests you.

Mea Culpa

It was recently brought to my attention that I never said thank you to the donors on our last hosting drive, and thus also never arranged for the gold stars on their profile. I'm very sorry about that, and I do appreciate every one of you for helping.

If you donated to the site and don't have a gold star already on your profile (and you want one) please shoot me a line at gmail.com - username mynuet, of course - and I'll get it together to figure out how to fix things.

Site moving

Next weekend the site will be moving to a new home. I will be putting the site into maintenance mode for a few hours while the transfer completes, so those of you who can still log in during maintenance should check the news often for the notice that I've begun. You will not want to update or add anything during that time, because it won't be transferred to the new server.

This move should take care of problems with access that people have been experiencing.

Funds!

I just sent off the money to pay for another year of hosting, and my bank account is woefully empty. Single parent, fixed income, etc. etc. - the point is, I can't afford it on my own, so please help me keep FIA going for another year. Send what you can by paypal to donations@dracoandginny.com - we're shooting to cover a total of $220.

Edited 8-29-2011:
And we've got it! Stop sending money unless you want to buy me lavish gifts. ;) FIA will continue another year.

New feature - ePub

We have a new feature available to everyone. As you know, when viewing a story you have always had the ability to generate a page of plain text or a .doc file to save for offline reading. Now you can also save your favorites as ePub files too! ePub is an electronic book format that can be read on most ereading devices, as well as some mobile phones and, of course, on computers as well. Authors, you can choose to disable this feature for your stories under Account Info > Manage ePub Stories. Right now the default for everyone is set to on, but feel free to turn it off if you don't want to make this file format available for readers.

Please note that as of now this is not available on the Vision mobile skin.

If you have any questions or problems, please reply here.

Periodic outages

I understand that people have been experiencing periodic outages. If you are one of the people, please email me at lyndsie.fenele@gmail.com. It's likely DNS issues and I will need to gather some information from you to pass on to our host so they can hopefully resolve the issue. Thanks everyone, I have what I need for now!

Closed for the Holidays!

The archive is closed to new submission for the next two weeks, although we reserve the right to make it longer if we need to; there's some maintenance Lyndsie is going to do when she recovers from the Martian Death Flu she's picked up, and I'd rather she take the time to recover before she does any heavy lifting.

So, merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate it, happy Yule/Kwanzaa/belated Hanukkah/end of year to all you who don't, and we'll see you back here in the new year!

Holiday Closing

Sorry for the late notice - I totally spaced.

As per our usual arrangement, we'll be closing the site to new submissions for two weeks to give the Cabal a break over the holiday. There may be site outages during that time, depending on what Lyndsie is doing on the back end, but for the most part you should continue to be able to read stories.

The closure starts tomorrow, Wednesday December 22, and lasts until January 5 or until we feel like opening again.

Yahoo email addresses

It seems that most Yahoo users probably aren't getting emails or notifications from the site. Direct emails are bouncing as well. If you need your password reset or something else, please submit a support ticket through the 'help' link and write down your ticket number. You probably won't get an email when the ticket is resolved, so you'll have to use the number to check for replies every once in a while. Unfortunately the realm of email is a little like the Wild West and we've been mistaken for cattle rustlers. (Blame the Yahoo users who've reported notifications they requested from the site as spam.)

Hosting fees

It's that time again - time for us to ask y'all to show the love, and the money. Another year of hosting will cost about $200, which is a lot to come up with out of one person's pocket but totally doable if we spread it out a bit amongst those who love FIA.

If you'd like to contribute, the easiest way is to use Paypal and send it to my account - mynuet's the name, and gmail which is a .com. I'd make it nice and clickable, but that's just an invitation to be scraped up by a spam crawler.

If you want to contribute but don't have paypal, shoot me an email at the above address and we'll see if we can work something out.

We've hit our goal! Thank you to everyone who contributed - I'll be emailing you directly in the near future to confirm your username for the gold star of FIA heroes. ;)

Upcoming Podcast - Ask the Author

There's no date set yet, but I will be getting together soon with a couple of other D/G fans to do a group podcast, and we're soliciting questions for an Ask the Author session. Want to know the inspiration for a certain plot? Curious about a characterization? Just want to know about the author's writing process? Got another burning question? Now's the time to ask.

Authors on deck: (subject to change)

Adelagia

Elle Blessing(way)

Lyndsie

Sarea Okelani

Submit your questions here or by email to lyndsie (at) dracoandginny.com. No deadline yet. Depending on how many we get, we may not be able to get to every question, so please be understanding. : )

Volunteer needed

Hello everyone. I'm looking for a volunteer with some time on their hands to do some work related to the podcasting site. When we moved to the current Podcast Management Script, we didn't have all the genres set up, or even really good descriptions for all the podcasts. It would be great if someone could go through and compile info for each podcast for genre, to verify the rating, and to make sure the description reflects the contents. Any takers?

EDIT: Aphrodite will be picking up where she left off on this project. If she needs any help, we'll let you guys now. Thanks for being awesome!

How to contact us

Thanks for answering my poll, everyone. Interesting stuff. I did find a way to do what I wanted to do that was simpler than I originally planned, so it ended up not even being necessary. : P

Check out the contact us page. I've done some editing on it which hopefully makes it clearer. Let me know if anything there can be improved.

Which brings me to my last topic - and forgive me if I sound annoyed. READ IT! Check out the knowledgebase (AKA the Help link), BEFORE contacting us. Also, for most things, you should submit a support ticket, not an email (and more people watch the support tickets anyway, so it's faster). And...

...if you do submit a question through the email contact form MAKE SURE YOUR ACCOUNT HAS A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS!!!

See how important that is? I never use multiple exclamation points. Common sense: if you send us an email, and the return email address is invalid, how exactly do you think we can answer your question? I had someone do this to me about five minutes ago, so if you're the person who just asked me to delete an account, this is why you have not heard from me.

Having a valid email address is required in the TOS anyway (an invalid email address is cause for account deletion), but it's also simple courtesy.

New poll :: IM

There's a new poll. I want to know what instant messaging programs you use most frequently. Please make sure to specify here if you choose "other."
