Opening!

In light of the fact that I have a migrane, and the new layout code is a little more complicated than I had thought, I am going to go ahead and reopen the site. Please be understanding that the site not in its final version of 2.0. We still need to make new skins, update them, troubleshoot them, and finish troubleshooting the archive it's self.

Personally I think the best way to troubleshoot is to let y'all have at it. If you run into errors please let us know, but for the most part, I think it's looking good.

Thanks for your patience, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Status Update -- Upgraded

We have successfully Upgraded the site to eFiction 2.0. All that is left now is to convert the layouts, and troubleshoot.

Posted by Megh on Dec 27, 2005 05:04 pm (1 Comments)

Still Closed

The moving from one host to another was a bit more complicated than it should have been, and so we haven't done the upgrade yet. As soon as that's done, we'll be reopening - I don't want to open and then close again, so that's why we're just extending the time we're closed. My apologies - I miss the archive as much as y'all do.

Closed for the holidays

While I haven't been able to change the settings, any stories or reviews added to the site from now until we're done with the move and upgrade WILL NOT BE SAVED. The site may or may not be up and available for reading on any given day, as we're fiddling with it. Barring catastrophe, we'll return next week.

Moving!

Folks, we're going to close on the 19th and reopen on the 26th. Not only does this give us on the Cabal the week off reading duty for Christmas, it also means that we're going to have some time to move the archive and implement the site upgrade. Hopefully none of you will go into shock or mourning without the site, and we won't be gone long. And, once we're back? Author alerts! :D

Reminder and pimping

First, I want to remind you all that if you can't get our emails, we will still get really pissed if you resubmit without changes. People on hotmail especially seem to have this problem. If your fic disappears and you did not receive an email, contact me before you resubmit it.

And now for more pleasant news! You may have seen Lysel no Heya's fabulous artwork (if not, follow the link near the bottom of the main page). Well, now she's making the most absolutely adorable plushies ever, for sale. Go and see them here! For now, check out Ginny and Draco:

Panhandling for Server Space

Y'all may have noticed that we've been having issues lately with the site being slow as molasses, and pages taking forever to load and timing out, plus the stats for the site being broken and taking weeks to fix. Between all that and having to devote a day to working on the site just to fix a frickin' typo, we'd like to move to a different host.

As is says in the footer, though, your site mommys are poor, therefore can't afford the new hosting fees without help. That's where you, our loyal readers, come into the picture.

The site will not disappear. Our time on the current server won't expire until July, so if we need to we can stay here. It'd be really nice to be able to move soon, though, because that way it'd be easier for us to install the upgrade of efiction, which will bring with it stuff like author alerts and other goodies.

If you want to donate and don't want to use the button, you can paypal to donations [at] dracoandginny.com, and if you don't use paypal and still want to donate, just contact me directly and we'll work something out.

Cabal applications

The poor top fics of September barely got a chance to be up before they were rudely shoved aside. *sniff* If you still want to see them, hit the 'more' button below.

As for what I'm announcing that's important enough to push them aside, I sent emails out last night to everyone who had expressed interest in joining the Cabal. If you're interested and did not receive any emails from me, please let me know.

News in general

You may've noticed that the top fics list for last month has yet to make it to the main page. This is because something is wrong with the stats page, and your fearless leader has had a lot to do and thus has not had time to sort it out. I'll get to it, and to picking new featured fics, but I don't know when. Hopefully before December is all I'm committing to right now, as being a single parent in college is a wee bit time consuming.

On that note... We need more people in the Cabal. I'm working on devising some sort of test, but I don't know how quickly I'll be able to come up with that, so if any of y'all are interested, let me know. The main requirements are that you need to be able to tell whether or not something is correct in terms of spelling and grammar, and that I need to be able to trust you to be, if not precisely professional, then at least courteous to both the fellow members of the Cabal and the people whose fics you're reading. If this sounds like you, please drop me an email at mynuet / gmail, which is a .com. I'd make a little clickable linky thing, but I don't feel like drowning in spam.

In other news, we're trying to figure out a way to have a chapter update notification feature, whether a mailing list or an RSS feed or a Livejournal community or something. If anyone out there has any suggestions on how this might be accomplished, give me a buzz.

Thanks. :)

Thank you to everyone who participated in the efforts to provide relief for victims of hurricane Katrina - Propheting raised over $500 for the Red Cross!

Buy an author!

If you were leery of donating through The Fund because of the specificity of where the donations go, fear no longer! StrangerWithMyFace has started a donation drive on the D/G "newspaper", Propheting, to benefit the Red Cross.

Among the authors up for bid, now and in the coming days, are Fearthainn, Where Is Truth, Sillysun, Jade Okelani, and Sarea Okelani - and several others who are talented as well as goodhearted. So go! Help your fellow humans and get fic while you do!

Hurricane Katrina Relief

Two things!

1. Ever wished you could get one of your favorite authors to write something just for you? Well, there's several really good authors (and me) signed up at The Fund, a Livejournal community dedicated to raising money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. If you're an author or talented with graphics, you can volunteer to do things, or if you just want to donate to a worthy cause, you can get something back for it. Authors from the HP fandom so far include Echo, Where is Truth, Thalia Kendall, Bana05, and your friendly neighborhood site mummy, Mynuet - and where else are you going to get fic written by an author you like to your specifications?

PLUS! See the pretty banner up there? Megh drew that. See the nifty site you're on? Megh made that. Megh has volunteered both of these services for donations to the cause, because Megh is the coolest person ever.

2. There's a project going on to compile data from various sources into a central location to find friends or family affected by Katrina. You can find out more here, including how you can volunteer to help enter the data and maybe make it easy for someone to find the people they love.

D/G Classics Results!

The voting is now closed, and the results are posted here. Enjoy!

D/G Classics Voting!

So, remember how I asked y'all to nominate D/G classics?

My God, when I ask for nominations, y'all deliver. 113 long and completed fics and 65 short ones. I don't feel it's fitting for me to cut down the list, because some of the nominated fics are not what I would consider "classics", but that's such a subjective judgment that I don't think it should be up to me. So, all of the fics nominated are available to be voted on.

If you have a Livejournal account, go

HERE to vote for the long and completed stories, and

HERE to vote for the short stories.

If you don't have a Livejournal account, you can either create one here for free, or you can send me an email at dgclassicvoting [at] gmail [dot] com. The voting period will be open at least until the 26th, but it may extend a few days depending on when I have the time and energy to sort through all of the absentee ballots. The winners will be the ones who get the most votes, period; vote for as many or as few as you like.

There's a whole lot of stories that I'd never heard of, and I'm pretty widely read when it comes to D/G, so it's worth checking out just for the list of links, I think. I'm sorry I couldn't come up with a way to have the voting be completely separate from Livejournal, but it just got way too complicated to try to figure out a way.

New rule

As I just added to the submission guidelines:

If you have not received permission from Mynuet to skip the validation queue, do not submit more than five chapters of a fic at one time. It causes a lot of unnecessary stress for the Cabal member who is on duty that particular day, and delays the approval of both your fic and everyone else's.

Posted by Mynuet on Aug 17, 2005 05:23 pm (2 Comments)

The Classics

So, I was thinking. Someone in the recent past referred to the list of D/G classics from the old Fire and Ice Library, and it occurred to me that that list is handy in the sense of it gives newer fans a sense of what the big stories are in the fandom, but it's kind of outdated like whoa, since it's years old.

Therefore, I'm soliciting opinions - what do you think are the classic D/G fics, the ones that you can go back to and think "This is why I love this ship!"? If possible, I'd like to eventually narrow it down to a set number of both (complete) novel length fics and a corresponding number of short stories - probably ten of each, unless we go hog wild and go for fifteen. Once we arrive at a final list, I'll post it as an essay here, and that way anyone who wants to can access it.

What I'd like is suggestions/nominations for what y'all consider the very best D/G fics, the ones you keep going back to as reaffirming why you love the ship. There's two categories, novel-length and short stories, and I'm limiting it to completed fics just because I think you really can't judge a work's merits until you can see the complete product. Apart from that, my only real request is that you nominate things that truly fit the definition of "classic", or at least "best", not "I wrote this and all my friends really like it!" or "Dude, my friend/someone I fangirl wrote this, so I must nominate is so she'll be happy and flattered."

You can put nominations here as comments, or you can leave them here. In a week or so, when we have a confluence of sufficient nominations and time for me to sort them out, I'll hold a vote and we'll have a new list of classics. :D

End of hosting drive

Yay! Thanks to several generous donations, FIA can fully pay its hosting and domain registration for another year. Hopefully it will go as well as the past one has. :D

Posted by Mynuet on Jul 31, 2005 02:43 am (0 Comments)

Hosting

FIA needs to have the yearly domain registration and hosting fees paid, and so if any of y'all care to help out, you can forward any spare change you've got lying around to us by paypal. Since the nifty button doesn't work, you'll have to go to Paypal's main page and just send to donations [at[ dracoandginny.com. If you're really desperately longing to contribute but can't/won't use paypal, contact me and we'll work something out.

I'll cover whatever the difference is between what y'all can donate and the actual cost, but as I am a college student and a single parent, it's a bit much to cover the bulk of on my own. I can't promise that contributing will guarantee your stories always get validated instantly, but I might be talked into drabbling for the people who contribute to keeping this site open for everyone to enjoy. :)

HBP Spoilers

I've had to deal with my first complaint about someone who had no warnings about HBP spoilers. As there are parts of the world where it hasn't come out yet, I don't think it's fair to simply disregard them yet. Basically, until my friend in Greece gives the all-clear, this policy remains in effect.

If you choose not to put in the warnings and I get wind of it, then the first time, I'll be editing your story to add the following:

BLATANT HBP SPOILERS! SERIOUSLY, FOLKS, DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ HBP! THIS CAPSLOCKED ADDITION BROUGHT TO YOU BY A CABAL MEMBER WHO DOESN'T WANT TO GET YELLED AT, AS THE AUTHOR APPARENTLY DID NOT NOTE THE BIG REQUEST ON THE MAIN PAGE. DON'T SPOIL OR THIS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU.

If that disclaimer gets deleted without a suitable one replacing it, then I'll delete the fic. If you upload another HBP story without a warning, then I'm deleting the fic, not adding the warning. Thus far I've managed to steer clear of 98% of the wank out there surrounding the release of HBP, and if one of you makes it start heading in my direction by not warning people about spoilers, I will be Most Displeased.

While I'm typing a news item, though, I'd like to invite you all to swing by a new LJ community, 1000 Ways to Love Your Ship. There does exist a D/G version, but we don't have either R/Hr or H/Hr versions yet, so if any of you are interested in those (or any other) ships, feel free to swing by and share the love. And if you love D/G, which I suspect might be the case if you're on this archive, come join us as we try to get to 1,000 ways our ship is loved. :)

Posted by Mynuet on Jul 24, 2005 02:19 pm (0 Comments)

We're back!

Unless I did something way wrong, we should be back! Oh, FIA, how I have missed you! *cuddles archive*

As a courtesy to other readers, I'm asking that you not put spoilers into the title and summary of your fic, and that you put a prominent warning of spoilers within the fic either in your summary or at the top of the fic. I am not, at this point, making it a bannable offense, but that's because I think most of you are good people. However, if we end up having problems, I'll break out the bitch mode, okay?
