Reviews For The Chain

Hi - I've actually never written a review before that I can remember, which, in retrospect, is reprehensible because the D/G ship community was a small but integral part of my formative years. After an extremely long hiatus from the fanfiction scene (6-7 years), I came back to re-read a few pieces that withstood the memory test of time, and in the process, stumbled upon The Chain. All this preface just to say that I really feel this story is special, and that's why I was even so moved to write this review.

Although it's likely been a couple years since you even logged onto this site, I just had to say, on the off chance that you'll see this, that these two chapters comprise the most intriguing incomplete work I've read here and elsewhere in the HP fandom.

The ache your writing invokes is exquisite. The details you use to paint Ginny and Draco's history are stunning and the mystery plot allusions you throw in beg for further exploration.

I understand if you've moved on, but if you ever have even a wisp of a thought to come back to this plot, please do. Your best writing on the site is here.

I wish you would come back to this story. It was beginning to be a great story.

I just had to go back and re-read this story. I think it's so great and you really manage to capture the emotions of the characters. Hope you have a chance to update soon.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! The DG Forum Fic Exchange over at FFN is winding down, and that means I'll be able to get back to work on chapter 3. I'm not planning to abandon this story. =)

Gah. Okay, so when she was flying at dawn I thought, "I hope Henry is a dog." Makes the whole thing much easier to swallow. I think I was remembering your drabble about frosting the cake and dying a little at the thought. How funny that Draco is a cat person. I was so relieved.

And you have created an OC boyfriend. Or very nearly; I don't recognize the name. ;)

So many plot-threads left dangling in this chapter. Astoria, Marcus, Hermione ... the first chapter felt very neat and tidy, contained. This one feels like a corridor with a dozen doors and I'm very curious to see how you'll navigate through all of them.

Can't wait to find out. :)

Ohhhh, you.

I sensed there was a history here right away. But when he asked "How's Henry?" and I quickly realized (it took /perhaps/ two seconds) that you were unlikely to make up an OC boyfriend and that this was probably a child, my heart stopped.

Cruel, cruel Rowan, to break up Draco and Ginny. :( I hope this is a story of how they find love again and the last chapter isn't going to take me back a few years and walk me through the bloody mess. I am nervous.

Nerves aside, as always, the details shine. Your descriptions are never labored and yet I can picture it all, from the luxe ball to the lift in his eyebrows that you didn't write but happened, I swear. Gah. I can't deny that I envy your talent. ;)

I like how Draco keeps calling Ginny his wife. Can't wait to read more!

Author's Response: Yeah, shows he's TOTALLY over her, doesn't it? :D Thanks for reviewing!

I must admit, I haven't gotten a dose of D&G in a long while, you've given me something to look forward to!

Author's Response: And I hadn't written DG in a long while, so I guess this will be a journey of OTP rediscovery for both of us. Thanks for reviewing! :)

:C This is the face I'm making now. And I'm not sure if these tears are emotion or irritation from staring at a bright screen in the dark, but either way you're the cause of them! I wish I could explain how good your writing is, but all I can do is feel it. I am so with Draco and Ginny in their rollercoaster of emotions, all the anger and pining.

As you intended, I'm sure, I am now dying of curiosity over the mystery of Hermione. And I love that Molly and Draco get along (and Ginny and Lucius too! I almost forgot!). Not only is that a twist from the normal feuding families cliche, it feels so real. That Molly wants Draco and Ginny to get back together just as much as we do is wonderful! And her line at the end of that section about how she's not supposed to get attached? Ugh. Could you rip my heart out any more than you already have? I love that Henry is a cat and not a child, too! I was a little worried about Draco's abandonment of him last chapter. Oh man, there were so many things I wanted to say and love and point out, but I've forgotten the rest. I can only repeat what I said last chapter about your beautiful writing, mature plot, and real characters.

Oh yeah, I feel so bad for Astoria. She's going to get really hurt in this story, and I hate to see innocents hurt (which is one reason why I'm not a fan of typical love triangles).

And lastly, your reply to my previous review made my day as well. :)

Amazing! Does this mean that Ginny left him because he didnt want to have children? What did Draco's letter say? So many unanswered questions. You definitely know how to keep a reader on the edge of their seats! Keep up the great work.

Author's Response: Thanks! I can tell you the baby thing played a role, but I don't think that was the only reason. Also, I'm not sure it was Ginny who left. :/ Remember in chapter one, how she said she was tired of waiting for "a return that would never come", and her ironic snort when Molly said "after you left him"? I'm glad you're curious about Draco's owl -- I'm sure Ginny's dying to know, lol. More answers (and probably questions) to come. Thanks for reviewing!

I really think this is your best writing so far. I really felt Ginny's sadness. Can't wait for more.

Author's Response: That's an awesome compliment, thank you!

Love! I adore this story and every little detail that demonstrates how so /not/ over their relationship is. They definitely had some very serious problems as a married couple, but it is obvious in the chemistry you created between them that their feelings for each other are still very much alive. Brilliant! Cannot wait for more. :)

Author's Response: I loved your review! XD Thank you so much!

Hahaha farthest thing from boring! And I think that enough happens ummm gosh where do I begin? The beginning of the chapter could have been cliche I think but it just was not the case. I loved the bit with Molly and what she says. And then Astoria mentioning having babies...:( Gin agreeing to a date seemed like it was only prompted because Marcus was there and oh I love the bit with Theo. It was like you first mentioned Theo and Hermione sort of casually through Molly then here you add more intriguing details and it makes me curious. Not only what happened there but you know Ginny and her life with Draco and his friends which makes me wonder about her own friends? And by the time Draco shows up, it doesn't really end quietly because hahahaha not with these two. Like you said no one's over anyone and the moment they're in the same room it inevitably shows which makes me think the three years apart were more of avoidance? :) I can't shut up, I just love this so much like I don't even really mind so much that they're supposed to be divorced because they keep holding on to things about the marriage and each other in little ways which you've shown! And I can just imagine what's behind the scenes oh oh oh The end bit makes my heart ache but all is well :) Narrative is way gorgeous as always. Last, I totally agree with you about Astoria, she would be perfectly nice and maybe even fitting, just not in a world where Ginny exists and is sooooo it for Draco and vice-versa. Take care and thank you! :)

Author's Response: Tenna, thank you for another lovely review! I think your impressions are spot on. Your question about Ginny's own friends is a good one -- where are they? I think that this marriage ended for many reasons, and the conspicuous absence of anyone in Ginny's life who is unrelated to Draco might be a clue in that sense. More on this in the next chapter.Thank you again! ^_^

Oh, and Draco is still very possessive of Ginny - despite of the fact that he himself is engaged!!

One of the first things he talks about when he meets her at the wedding is addressing the issue of Ginny's date or lack of thereof. And the moment he learns about her date with Marcus Aubrey he rushes over and I think protecting Malfoy Holdings' name is only a side part of the reason.

I want to smack him even though he can't be solely blamed for the marriage failor.

But I so hope they overcome their issues and get together again!!

Author's Response: Exactly! He seems to be keenly aware of Ginny's dating life, and I also don't think that the Malfoy financial interests are the only reason why Draco was upset here. He needs to get it together. u_u Thank you for coming back to add this, that was awesome! :D

Thank you for another great chapter!

This one obviously sheds some more light on DG relationship.

I really felt for Ginny - I assume that Ginny wanting a child and Draco refusing to have one was one of the major issues in their marriage and then to hear Astoria say that they are going to try for the baby right away!

I also think another major issue between them was the whole society thing, Ginny despising the requirement to pose and pretend. Perhaps she also feels that Draco didn't think her suitable to have his child. I suppose they didn't really talk about their problems but fought instead.

I'm not sure about Astoria's motives. Why is she being nice to her fiancée's ex? Is she just sociable or does she have a motive? Was her mentioning babies innocent or deliberate?

I'm really waiting for the next chapter!

Author's Response: pitzi, I loved your review, and I love that you came back to add more thoughts -- more on that later. You're absolutely right in that the baby thing was a big issue in their marriage, and that the society thing and the lack of communication also played a part. I don't think it's ever really ONE thing that kills a marriage. As for Astoria, you're absolutely right to question her motives. So far she's shown herself to be without malice, but she's not stupid and the first thing we heard about her was her "unfailing intuition". I'm sure on some level she must know that Draco might still be in love with Ginny. Lets see what happens next. Thanks again!

This isn't a premise I usually enjoy because I like to think of Draco and Ginny as happy together, but in this one chapter you've shown me that just because their marriage didn't work out, that doesn't necessarily change the essence of the characters. The dislike, insults, and wit are all still there; they're just wrapped up in an underlying pain that makes me hurt on their behalf. I think it definitely takes a mature person to tackle this scenario, and on top of that, you have a mature, beautiful style of writing that I can't help but envy.

This is the first line where I noticed it:
"He allowed her to drag him over for a dance and placed his hands where they ought to be quite mechanically, although not without his characteristic and effortless sort of grace."

I don't know how to describe it except with the word "expressive." You choose the perfect words (out of hundreds, thousands from which to choose!) to convey the right feeling or mood, and you seem to do it effortlessly. It doesn't come off as too much, AND you effectively paint a real picture in readers' minds. I'm in awe of the real characters you've portrayed here, and of how excellently you've crafted this story so far.

Author's Response: Jessica, in all honesty your review made me a bit teary eyed. This is such high praise, and more so coming from you, a writer whom I admire tremendously. Thank you! You totally made my night. :D

I dearly love stories that have a more mature and complex relationship. I particularly enjoyed how you portrayed Ginny's disdain for the people at the party - then how she realized that she was just like them. I see this as a key in the upcoming story of how and why the couple was divorced. I also love the way both Draco and Ginny seem to care so deeply for each other, even after they've been apart for some time. It's very clear that they are still drawn toward each other, and I'm intrigued to learn more about what happened between them in the past. Very powerful beginning and I'm looking forward to more.

Author's Response: Gidge, I'm always so happy to get reviews from you! This is actually my first "grown up" story, and I'm glad that you think it's going well. Thank you so much! :)

wow, this was breathtaking. i haven't read anything that's evoked this much emotion in me in awhile.

you've characterized them perfectly, and the story is very gripping. can't wait to see where this goes.

Wow! This was amazing!
You pictured Draco and Ginny and how they handle each other after their divorce so in character for them!

It's obvious that they still care for each other so I wonder what went wrong in their marriage.

And I really hope they get back together and work everything out...

Love Blaise!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I'm glad that you thought they were in character! That was actually one of the things I was worried about here. Glad you liked Blaise's short cameo! I always have fun writing him. :)
