Temporary Site Closing for DH

After consultation with the populace and with the Cabal, we've decided that the site will be closed for two weeks surrounding the release of Deathly Hallows. The shutdown will start on July 20, and end August 3, if all things go as planned.

During this time, Lyndsie will be performing a site upgrade, which will hopefully fix some of the recurring problems that we've been having, especially the search. Because of that, there will be times when the archive is completely unavailable. In the times that Lyndsie is not working on it, the site will be available to read as normal, but I'll be shutting down anonymous reviews in order to head off trolling like "harry&ginny 4 eva!!! " did soon after HBP.

When we come back, there will be a DH spoiler warning added to the existing ones, and that one will be mandatory for a certain amount of time to come. Its omission will be grounds for deletion of the fic and the author's account, so don't test me on this one.

Any questions/complaints/whining? Feel free to use the comments function.

Okay! August 3...oh how far away that seems!

razzle_be_dazzled @ Jun 24, 2007 07:50 am

I know! If we feel like it, we may start sooner, but I want to make sure Lyndsie has enough time to do the upgrade and read the book.

Mynuet @ Jun 24, 2007 08:21 am

this site has gotten mucho boring but i gotz 2 say you guys did a terrific job handling it. its just that the fic by burgamdi... something never got finished. oh yeah, i really think d/g is the best pairing but its gonna b a no-show in deathly hallows, i know so. and can you delete my account? the fics never get finished in this site. gosh keep a person waiting long enough!
see ya,
had a "little fun" reading yer fics!
harry, and ima boy!

@ Jun 24, 2007 09:50 am

I think it's particularly fair. :)

elyaeru @ Jun 24, 2007 10:16 am

That was a bit rude, don't you think?

razzle_be_dazzled @ Jun 24, 2007 12:10 pm

^ I agree, what the heck was up with that?

Thanks for all your hard work guys! Although I have to admit, I'm really glad you're leaving the archive open for reading. I don't think I would survive without something to occupy my time.

soundspretty @ Jun 24, 2007 12:14 pm

Harry22 has some issues in terms of understanding what fanfic is about - this is the person who proposed that I make a rule that all fanfics have to update at least once a month. So, no worries as to wounds to my fragile soul, and I'll go ahead and comply with his request. Assuming he's still a he, and not as she as was claimed the last time there was contact.

Mynuet @ Jun 24, 2007 12:23 pm

Are you kidding? I can rarely get anything accomplished within a year let alone a month! :P

soundspretty @ Jun 24, 2007 12:30 pm

It's a good idea that you shut down submissions right or the whole site, but anyway the rule about spoliers thanks for that I read fairly slow, and would really hate to click on a fic and be greatly disappointed from the spoliers that may or may not be in there.

Great work with the site, the upgrades are FABOLOUS!

rebel_angel @ Jun 24, 2007 01:15 pm

that was pretty uncalled for (the review up there)but yeah well I'll miss it while it's shut down. This site is my favorite so great work on everything!

WhiffleBird @ Jun 24, 2007 01:22 pm

I think this is a very fair time frame; I've told people that they can expect me never to speak to them again if I get any spoilers, even minor ones. This series has been with me for eight years; it means too much!

You guys do a great job and don't get nearly enough credit. :)

Gwendydd @ Jun 24, 2007 03:02 pm

Well, I don't even understand what the author of the review wanted to say in the first place... all the net speak makes me want to poke my eyes out...

Anyway, although I'm really going to miss the site while it's down, I think that most of us will spend it reading DH, and I'm sure no one wants any spoilers, so I guess it's a nice time frame, especially if you have to work on the upgrades too... you guys are great

elentari @ Jun 25, 2007 12:50 am

I think that it is a good idea to be shutting down the site and doing your upgrades then and I am also glad you're leaving the reading function open. Also, another added bonus of having spoiler warnings is that those of us who go in denial after the last book (I probably will, especially if D or G die) will know which stories not to read so as we can continue to live in our fantasy world. I know that after HBP, some Snape/Hermione fans went into denial. Anyway, I will read the last book to read it, though I don't see myself holding much stalk in it. Oh, and I also think taking down the anonymous review is a good idea. Thanks for all you do on this site. When I first saw the title of this post, I thought that you guys were shutting down the site permanently and I almost cried. I am glad I was wrong. I will take anything after having had a flash of forever pass before my eyes.

Mollie @ Jun 25, 2007 01:38 am

*mutters about the close x button*

Now, to re-write what I wrote just before, only to close the window *rolls eyes*

-I think that holding the
submissions is a good idea.

- The comment was uncalled for, but if I recall again, correctly the 'said' person won't be around anytime soon.

- You know my opinions about what to do with the forums- they're posted on FIAF anyways

- A huge applause should go to Myn and the Cabal for all their hard work

- All the best luck Lynds, with fixing the site up a bit- it can be frusttrating at times, but you have my support.

- A reply to Mollie's comment- Dahling, you weren't the only one that fell for the April fools joke

- On a final and most random note, I forever hold my.. ah pfft

D/G - The OTP

(I'm sorry about any SPaG mistakes)

Alluring_Twilight @ Jun 26, 2007 01:04 am

Hey! I think its a great idea to shut down the site! I remember when HBP came out I took a break from reading to check something out in a hp-site........horrible mistake. All these past joyfull years of having HP series in my life flashed before my eyes as I saw the huge "What?!?! Why would she kill Dumbledore!!??" article in the front page on what used to be one of my favorite sites..... To say that I wanted to KILL is an understatement. Needless to say I have never entered said site again. And anyways DG.com is way better! So, I hope everything goes great, it would be great to have (for me atleast) the "Photobooth" skin again! *Hint* *Double Hint*
Anywaaayyy, you really dont get much credit for what you do with the site, you guys are the best!
P.S.- Guys dont ever EVER enter any site before reading the book, make this a rule for you whenever an HP book comes ou...wait..ah that was cruel.. I'm off to cry my eyes out and break everything in my path now...

nArIan @ Jun 26, 2007 05:03 am

Harry22 Clearly has never actually written a PROPER fanfic of his own ('LOLZ Draco and Ginny got down and dirty, the endz.') DOESN'T count. Nor does he realise that all us authors actually have this thing called a REAL LIFE. I know, I know, our real lives and family troubles and money problems and work issues and stuff are all supposed to be SECONDARY concerns when it comes to popping out the fic. How silly of me not to realise this! *gasps*

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the 'little fun' comment was clearly a double entendre and the crude intention in it was clear. All I have to say to that is 'Little fun'? Aww, you poor thing. Little is it? I'm not surprised. Maybe when you've worked in your low-end-no-wage-no-skill-illiterate-netspeaker job for 50 years you'll be able to afford one of those devices they sell in SPAM mail.

Am getting quite nervous about the book now. I've abstained from almost ALL discussion of the plot or theories pertaining to said plot for the last year at least, and believe me when I say I will refuse to open any e-mail, or visit any website until I have read the last page. I won't even play WoW because I KNOW they'll be talking about it in gen chat or guild chat or even some saddo noob will be /yell spamming the zone channel with the result. So I will be a hermit until I've read the last word. Twice. To be sure I've read it.

As for the site, submission-locks are the only way forward in instances like these, although I wonder if that still counts in instances where authors of existing stories have cabal permission to skip the veto queue when posting chapters? (Just a question).

Lex.

Myanceris @ Jun 26, 2007 06:57 am

Yes, all unsolicited submissions can be turned off, so the only people who can change anything or upload fics are administrators of the site. I'm sure all of us on the Cabal promise to not abuse our power.

I think it's on the harsh side of fair. ...and I think the only reason I see it as harsh is because...seriously, how are we supposed to survive TWOWEEKS without all the D/G ff?! haha, but anyway

Lyndsie--I hope the upgrades go WELL! ....and fast, but that's selfish.

So, we WILL be able to read the fanfic while Lyndsie's not upgrading--that's what you're saying, right? Now will the upgrades take the whole time, or will it be open intermittently throughout that two weeks, with that no-anonymous-comments thinger going?
Sorry, just a bit confused.

sweetpea @ Jun 26, 2007 11:12 am

Omg, scared then! I come onto the site and the first thing I see it 'Site Closing'. It was like April fools all over again for me! Then again, I always have been one to jump to conclusions, glad I read on or I might have started crying then and there! Anyway, I'm sure alot of people will be too busy reading the book to be on the site anyway, and if not then it would be rather stupid to be on a Harry Potter (Well, a Draco and Ginny) fanfic site if you don't read the books.

Great idea, as long as I still get to read the fanfics that keep me going!

Haze @ Jun 26, 2007 11:40 am

When Lyndsie is working on the site, the site will be unavailable. When she is not actively working on the site, the site will be available for reading, but not for uploading fics or leaving anonymous reviews. Lyndsie wanted to do the upgrade during the DH shutdown so as to avoid having to close the site twice in close succession - we really are trying to keep y'all provided with D/G as much as possible.

And I think I'll go edit the header, so as not to panic anyone else. Sorry for any momentary heart failure I may've caused.

Mynuet @ Jun 26, 2007 03:24 pm

My first instant reaction was also, "WHAT, FIA is closing for two weeksish?????" but then I read that it'll still be readable and I started breathing again. Thank you Myn and Lyndsie for the loffly loffly work! We all understand that temporary shut downs are necessary for a completely amazing site.

I can't wait for the slew of great fics after DH because D/G fic writers always manage to twist canon into great D/G fics. I'm so excited!

Thank you again FIA mommys. Many hugs.

bere @ Jun 26, 2007 06:22 pm

Thanks for that explaination, Mynuet =) definitely helped.

sounds fabulous, good luck, girls!

sweetpea @ Jun 27, 2007 10:55 am

YAY, the shutdown ends on my birthday. What a great present. :-P

Keep up the good work on managing this site. You guys have been awesome! :)
