Wall of Praise?

A couple of minor notes: Authors are now allowed to delete anonymous reviews, since some utter lamebrain decided to leave spam in one. I'm beginning to favor the death penalty for idiot spammers, just from sheer frustration.

The next thing is that there's a new podcast available on the forums - it's our own Anise reading her story "Chocolate Shags" - yay, Anise! I also have a secret plot brewing, so keep an eye on the podcasts section of the forums so you can participate.

And, lastly, since I take the time to blame people in public, I thought I'd add a public word of praise for a particular author. No, she did not submit a perfect fic - in fact, the poor girl got rejected twice for errors, even though she was trying really hard to improve. What makes her worthy of mention is that she didn't go off and give up writing in a sulk, or whine and moan about how nasty the Cabal is, or tell herself and others that it was the fault of the uploading system or the site's rules being too stringent, or any of the other complaints that we've all heard too much of.

No, this girl sent a charming email apologizing for the trouble, mentioning her efforts with regard to having a beta, and thanking the Cabal members for their attempts to help - and that really is what we're doing when we point out in rejection letters what your errors are, attempting to help you become a better writer.

In any case, I won't name her directly because I don't want to embarrass the poor girl, but I wanted to point out that you don't have to be perfect to get on the good side of the Cabal, you just have to appreciate that we all work hard in order to have a good site and to help the people who archive with us. Yes, we insist on high standards, but we're willing to help people meet them if they treat us with respect and courtesy.

My point was always about these Wall of Shame posts turning into metaphorical witch hunts. A forum for boasting and flaming. Boasting is fine, it's your site to boast about, but the flaming looks just as bad my supposed pretentiousness (to repeat yet again, my opinion).

As for my "duplicity", I'm afraid I do not see it. I'm rather upfront and blunt. I have nothing to hide, no words to mince. There is no need for me deal in deception.

I do not feel the need to target or attack a specific person. You may believe I am, but I am not. I could single out behaviour and retort with pithy and scathing remark but I see no need. This is something I don't intend to make personal or take personally. If anyone was insulted, I apologise, yet again. It was never my intent. Nor was my intent to be altruistic. I have no delusions of grandeur. I do not find myself to be better than anyone. I was merely commenting on something I have seen happen more than once on here. If I am not allowed to comment on such, I am sorry and now know better.

But I digress. Since all or most of you must possess at least a MA in English Literature and scores of literature published, I will most humbly bow out from a battle I most certainly cannot win. I do not feel the need to drag this out any more than it already has. Take it as an act of withdrawal, as one who surrenders to the superior force.

No duplicity or sarcasm is intended by this. I am just clarifying since text only seems to convey the tone that the reader wishes it to intend.

I hope you all had a splendid holiday.

Oh, no, no sarcasm at all. I totally believe that you meant everything in the spirit of sweetness and charity. Further, I really truly am convinced that you have a degree that conveys to you the Ultimate Moral Authority and completely trumps anything I might have to say, as I'm a 31 year old undergrad, and a history major instead of that so-very-relevant English degree. Really. I said so, didn't I? And if you read anything else into it, well, you must just be feeling inadequate and defensive, as it certainly wasn't my intention. And you can believe that's the gospel truth, because I said so, and no one on the internet ever lies or misrepresents themselves or what they say.

For the record, you're allowed to say whatever you want, as you did. The basis for your martyr complex will have to be that you actually got called out on your bullshit.

I have been following the posts and I don't mean to stir the pot even more, but I just can't get over it. Even if you take away the obvious Cabal bashing, Incognito's original post is all just a bunch of bullshit to me.
I do not have a degree in English either. I am a 38 year old mother of two who enjoys reading. To suggest that becuase literature is subjective and intrepretive means we throw away basic sentence structure is idiotic. Also, the statement made about people using different styles of snytax and puncuation doesn't work for me either as they have nothing to do with someone using poor grammar. I do agree that just because someone has good story ideas but can't write for crap we shouldn't overlook them. Isn't that why there are editors, proofreaders, BETAS and even ghost writers? Even the best grammatically correct writers have somone else look over their work before they submit it for the public to read.
When it comes down to it what REALLY irritated me was that she says her post was not an attack and continues on through subsequent posts to say its not personal and on and on and on, but come on let's just call a spade a spade.

It just makes me sad that this all sort of started off as a "yay for you!" post, and spiraled off into a fight =(

kudos to whoever that author is, seriously

sweetpea @ Jan 04, 2007 01:54 pm

The author was me, and I don't mind being put on the spot. My beta that I had before didn't catch mistakes I had made and didn't really help much. I have a really good beta now and since I've switched I have had no problems so far. Thank you though for the start of this even though it went in a different direction then planned. =)
