Community Reading

I'm a bad mod, and I should've posted this before, so y'all wouldn't have missed all but the last bit of PoA - mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

But, if any of you are interested (forgiveness of me is optional), you can go to this board on the forums and take part in a D/G community reading of the HP books before the seventh book comes out in just a few short months.

Speaking of the seventh book, we're still formulating what we're going to do in terms of a policy regarding the release and avoidance of spoilers. Last time, we just shut down for two weeks, but after the reaction to April 1st, I'm a tad reluctant to do that without a loooooot of prep time. So, if anyone has any suggestions, chime in - but in the meantime, rest assured that anyone spoiling things for the rest of us will be dealt with harshly.

Ok, my two cents worth would be a lock down for a forthnight. It's only fair to all really. No nasty spoiler suprises and the Cabal gets a nice break too. Rereading old favourites and maybe hitting other fandoms for a couple of weeks won't kill, although it may hurt ;-)

I like the new story submission lock and forum "portal" ideas.

They seem the most viable. I wonder...is it possible that when you click on the forum link a pop up appears, much like the rating warnings, that give some sort of warning that spoilers may be on the boards so read cafefully and warning of a painful death by hench frogs if they do spoil in the wrong place?

Well I'm already boycotting the seventh book because I'm afraid of what is going to happen and would rather live peacefully ignorant.

Still I have a suggestion. I don't know how complicated this would be but maybe you can have something pop up like with the extremely naughty fics and that you are reading this at your own risk.

In fact maybee you could have an option under membership options, like the Extremely naughty fics where you have to be 18 or older but instead you'll click a box that says I have finished the seventh book. That way it let's you through.

I think the forum should have a portion where folks can go to talk about the book. And, people be forewarned before going in that spoilers are being discussed in this portion of the board. Also request that people don't make avatars depicting scenes or dialogue in the book because people do look at those. I don't think it's okay to ban all talk pertaining to the book, especially since that is what brought us all together in the first place to discuss. Limit it, but don't all together ban it either.

A 2 week shut down seems very excessive to me. Perhaps a warning that all submissions will be greatly delayed, so that the Cabal has adequate time for DH enjoyment. That way Cabal members can check submissions at their leisure, with out ending up with a 2 week backlog.

My opinion on the forum is to close for 24-48 hours. Reopen forums with spoilers only allowed to be posted in selected topics. Have topics to discuss sections of the book, and for the book as a whole. I think most people will read the book quickly and then go back for a slower, more enjoyable read. And that they would enjoy having a place to discuss the chapters.

Warn that anyone posting a spoiler somewhere else is expelled. I agree that some jerk may post a big spoiler. So at the top of the forums and every where else, post a huge neon sign “If you haven't read the book yet, you probably don’t want to be here"

My feeling is that no matter what, if you get online you are going to come across spoilers. If you haven't read the book yet, you should avoid HP sites altogether until you finish reading it. I suppose this sounds harsh, but I think if you go into a site before reading the book, it’s your own fault if you get spoiled.

I think a new story submission lock is the best way to go in this situation.

Although, I did read that some authors are allowed to submit their stories independently. In that case, are they really that large a group to be worried about? If so, is there no way for their story submission to be locked as well, even just for two weeks?

If u lock down the site, I may have to eat you ;)
