Promise Us Everything by Eustacia Vye    (Reviews - 130)

The fallout of a magical clandestine war is difficult to wade through, and reconstructing society takes work to be done right. Unfortunately, too many old prejudices remain. Ginny sees the world for what it is and is determined to fix it properly. This leads to all sorts of unlikely allies.

A very intriguing start.. I like the style - how Draco's thoughts go through everything from the Final Battle to the present while explaining how the 'Dark side' has been maligned meanwhile. I particularly liked the part about how Narcissa had been shunned by others in high society. It builds up the picture of Draco's discontent and frustration with the current system very well. Ginny's thoughts on what's happened with government policy were interesting, too.

Author's Response: Thank you! It was what drew me to the original drabble, I think. I saw such possibilities in fleshing out the society they lived in and how the characters would have been affected after the last battle. I wanted it to be something subtle (like the society shunning) and entirely plausible as part of the \"good\" of the new regime. They\'re not actively torturing anyone or hunting anyone down, but the pressures exterted are still there and still something to fight against. It\'s a more subtle war. :) I\'m glad you\'re enjoying it!

Hmm, interesting. I've seen many fics in which Draco has a hidden crush on Ginny - which Blaise confronts Draco about - but this story has to have the most naturally written, I think. I mean, specifically that Draco had to stop himself from correcting Blaise with 'Chaser' being Ginny's Quidditch position. Heh, clearly Draco's kept an eye on Ginny either at school or later on, in the media. Hehe, this story should be very interesting.. both Ginny and Draco are falling for one another, but they'll be hiding it for the 'greater cause', methinks.
Looking forward to the next chapter. :)

Author's Response: Well, Ginny is pretty popular in the media, being a Quidditch star, a Weasley and having dated Harry Potter. It would be hard for anyone to miss who she is, but at the same time I wanted to show that there\'s a bit more to the connection between them, since they kind of latch onto each other fairly quickly. :) Given that they\'re more mature than they are in the books, it also allows them to really talk, which would help the development of that crush. It was fun playing that off of each other. :)

Hehehe, I like how Ginny took the first step - it's usually Draco who makes the first move in D/G fics.

I like how Ginny tried to pry information from her father and brother - it was good to see how subtle she is at the moment, when no-one is the wiser regarding her motives.

One point for improvement would be to not have a long paragraph when introducing a new character - in the case of this chapter, Millicent. There is this paragraph explaining what's happened to her in a chunk of writing and I think that the story would flow better if these facts were interspersed throughout the narrative instead.

By the way, I enjoyed Ginny's talk with Narcissa - how the latter pointed out that Ginny should not be so forthcoming and forward with her intentions, no matter who she's talking with.

Looking forward to the next chapter. :)

Author's Response: I\'ll keep the flow in mind for future chapters. I\'m glad you liked the chat with Narcissa and how Ginny was more forthcoming with Draco. It\'s not how I usually write either of them, so it was nice to switch them up a bit. :)

Hehe, Pansy is brilliant. This was a great chapter. I liked pretty much every part of it. From how Draco slipped up and mentioned that he loves Ginny, to how Ginny doesn't know if it's too early to reciprocate, to Narcissa's cheeky mention of not breaking her son's heart, to how Ginny wowed the crowds and the Minister of Magic all in one evening.. oh, and the parts with Pansy were very well written. It's great to see the different facets of her character, rather than just the drunk!Pansy (although, that too can be fun to read about!). :)

Very much enjoying the fast updates and hoping that they continue. :)

Author's Response: I have a lot of favorite bits in this chapter, too. :) Since the story\'s already finished, there\'s no problem in posting fast updates. :D

Aw, what a lovely ending! I really enjoyed reading this story. I'm rather upset that it had to end so quickly. The story has a great plot that was engaging and intriguing.

I can't wait to read more of your stories!

Author's Response: I wanted it to end the same way the drabble did, so there really isn't any fallout of the announcement. Not that I had ideas on what happened next anyway. ^^; I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

Aw! How very upsetting. :'( I had a feeling that Draco was leaving Ginny just to protect her, but from the first chapter, I'd thought that Draco had planned on telling her his vision of their future together just before leaving her forever, but I see now that he actually meant to carry through with it all.

I thought that the scene with Draco not countering Bill's curses was ever so moving. It shows how deeply Draco cares for Ginny, more than his pronouncement of his love ever could.

I love this story, even though it is so heart-wrenching. I really look forward to your stories and this one surely didn't disappoint. I hope that there'll be more fics from you in the near future. :)

There are a few spelling mistakes in this chapter.
Second paragraph - 'Nigh after night' should be 'Night after night'
9th paragraph - 'however truth be told I had the patients' should be '... patience'
Near the end - 'a drug a doubted' should be 'a drug I doubted'.

Author's Response: Thank you, I will look into those mistakes and clean them up. Also, thanks for such a long review!

Hm, I just came across the review I wrote for this story, before the second chapter had been posted. Not sure why I didn't send it, but here it is, anyway:

~~
No! This *can't* be a completed story... I couldn't bear the angst if it is. :( What a heartbreaking ending. Draco must've known that he was going to leave, as he told her of his dreams of the future, however fantastical they may be. I wonder what'll happen when he returns... for I assume that he will return, in some form or another.
~~~
Now that I look back at it, it's such a shame that Draco truly did leave her forever. :(
Author's Response: :-/ it is kinda sad he couldn't come back, huh? Thanks for the review!
“What kind of cake do you think my brothers will want for their baby sister’s wedding?”
My heart breaks. :( The fact that Ginny asks after her family wanting to enjoy the wedding, rather than her own happiness, is a very telling way of showing how Ginny really feels about her new engagement to Harry. For some reason, that line about the cake seems oddly familiar... I seem to have read it somewhere before.
Overall, this is a wonderful piece. It took me a while to understand those one-liners separating the scenes. Heh, though looking back at them now, they seem very clear.
I hope that you'll be writing more D/G in the near future!
Author's Response: I'm glad that you found the piece so emotionally afftecting. As far as I know, I haven't read the line anywhere, and I definately didn't attempt to steal anyone else's words. But thank you for the wonderful review, and I hope I have many more reviewers like you in the future!
This is a lovely story. The metaphors and protracted imagery at the start was wonderful and drew me in. The image of Ginny being held by Draco as she cried was very emotive and almost fragile in a way. It was interesting to see it contrasted with her fiery encounter with Draco in years gone by.
I hope that there'll be more stories posted up.. I like your style of writing.
Author's Response: Thank you, i'm glad the imagery had that affect. :D x
*squee!* I absolutely adore this ficlet! It's the perfect blend of imagery and characterisation all interwoven with the Australian setting. I must admit that at the beginning I was thinking 'oh not another "Ginny emigrates to foreign country after the war" fic', but I was swiftly disabused of such notions and realised how well the descriptions of the surroundings parallel the characters' thoughts.
"[A] technicolour montage that played against his eyelids long after they’d closed." I love this paragraph of Draco's thoughts, this line in particular. Although, the last line has got to trump it - it's amazing that you manage that *not* to sound cheesy! It was a truly heartwarming line. (yup, everyone give me an *AWWWW!* ;D)
I'm really glad I came across this story - it's definitely going on my faves list. Hope to read more of your work!
LOL! Brilliant! I was reading this in the sitting room and trying to stop myself from giggling out loud - my parents would seem to think I'm not doing my homework on the computer that way. ;)
I love this story! It's great. I especially like how Hermione and Ron are blowing up in confusion at Draco's presence at their table, but Ginny just looks at Draco, considering the benefits of continuing with him.
I especially like how you haven't made Draco into this idealistic character - he still blushes when asking Ginny out formally - it's one of my fave parts. Of course the kiss is cute and the part that Hermione is horrified by Draco grabbing Ginny's bum; I can just imagine the high-pitched tone of voice..
This will definitely be put onto my faves list.
Author's Response: I think its great that you were reading this instead of doing homework, because I wrote it instead of doing assessments for uni. Procrastination brings out the best in fiction :p And I'm glad you like the characterisation - I like to think of it as my specialty. Thanks for the great review!
This is breathtaking. I like everything about it; even if it is a very angsty fic with very disturbing themes incorporated within it, the way you've portrayed the characters is brilliant.
A part that particularly sticks in my mind are when Draco goes to summon clothing for Ginny and is almost overwhelmed with grief for his mother. Another is the almost cleansed feeling that Draco had after Ginny's escape through the gate - the fact that he now had no fear for his fate.
Oh, and I thought I'd mention that I liked the balance between the prose and dialogue - many single p.o.v. fics have an excess of one to the detriment of the other, but you've managed a good mixture.
Author's Response:
Wow, shaded, you've given me one of the all-time best reviews I've ever gotten. I thank you for not only giving my writing such high praise, but actually telling me what you enjoyed most about the story, which is something I LOVE to hear. I'm glad that the story seemed to move you, and that you grasped the meaning behind the words so well.
It always amazes me to see what parts of my fics readers find most striking, and it always seems to be something different from reader to reader. The cleansed feeling you described so well was Ginny's way of saving Draco, without even knowing it. To me it's just as precious as the way he saved her,(that's where the whole "she rescues him right back" part comes in). Thank you for taking the time to write this amazing review, there's no way you can know how much it means to me. ^_^
*fangirl squee* I *adore* this story! Draco and Ginny are so very in character. It's been a while since I have read a Hogwarts-era D/G fic that has seemed so realistic. The actions of the characters are well written - the indecisiveness, confusion and wonder that they go through are fleeting in most cases, but still have a great impact.
Other than the ending, my favourite part is when Draco flies down from his broom and then is so frustrated and confused about Ginny and what he should do about her as he paces and mumbles to himself. That was brilliant.
I hope to read more of your stories in the future - this one was certainly a delight to read. :D
Author's Response: Hehehe... Yeah, I love Hogwarts-era, but I love that you find it realistic :) And yeah, I had a lot of fun with that part. I was going to have him just kiss her, but then I changed my mind at the last second, just like him, and the way it went was much more fun. :)
Aww! How sweet! This is just the kind of Christmas fic I needed. :D
I love the line: ~and it felt like Christmas morning, only twelve times as wonderful.~ It made me feel all Christmassy. ^_^
Hehe, I also like how Draco was kinda dense about Ginny liking him. His jealousy was cute, too - very well expressed, btw. Narcissa was wonderful - it's just like her to calmly point out Ginny & Harry's brunch. I could really sense her protectiveness over Draco.
The last paragraph was lovely; the engagement ring with 5 bands intertwined was amusing. The simplicity of the proposal makes it all the more romantic, I think.
Thanks for the great fic. Hope you have a great Christmas & New Year!
It's brilliant having both Ginny & Draco's points of views written in the same narrative. I guess that by reading the rpg I've forgotten how unique this style is in fanfics in general. It's very amusing to know of both their thoughts as the story progresses. In fact, I'm glad that everyone is asleep right now, or I'd be shot odd looks as to why I'm giggling at my computer screen. :D
I noticed how easy it is for Ginny to open up to Draco about things close to her heart; things that I don't think she'd readily tell other friends of hers. I mean the fact that the sorting hat offered to put her into Slytherin and the rather sombre part at the end of the chapter where she is clearly put out that someone - Harry probably - has mentioned that she's so complex that no one can understand her. *huggles Ginny* I'm glad Draco hinted at the end there that he, the Slytherin, would not give up so easily on someone like her. It's amusing how he is hinting but not actually going to move in on Ginny, since she'll be very difficult to replace as the Ministry Liaison. I'm glad that at least for this fic, I know that they're going to get their happy ending - and how as well!
These two chapters were great fun to read. I hope there'll be more lovely D/Gness up soon!
Ginny takes a job that will send her to France, but she can't stop thinking about the man who left her. One-shot.
A very touching story.
At first, I felt as though Ginny's determined efforts to write to Draco were rather out of character, especially if he had spurned her. However, a few letters in something seemed rather off, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Ginny seemed rather desperate to impart all the little details of her life to Draco. I must admit, I am rather dense and only thought that Draco might have died at the start of the fifth letter.
It's a testament to your great writing that you left clues there, but subtly, so that they were not at all obvious.
My favourite line has to be:
~My mum would adore him like she never adored you.~
That was just heartbreaking. It sums up just how Ginny and Draco were never quite accepted by the Weasley clan, but that another man, someone who doesn't make her as complete as Draco used to, would, or could, be warmly welcomed.
Author's Response: Thanks SO much! I really liked that line too. I think it sums up their relationship perfectly. You totally got the whole point and that makes me uber happy! You're not dense, it was meant to be vague and then have the reveal near the end. I'm glad it worked. Thanks you so much for reviewing! :D
